One Record Arsenal Might Break This Season

Arsenal players celebrating a goal
The English team, Arsenal, is one of the most loved football clubs in the world. After a 9 year trophy drought that lasted from 2005 to 2014, things don’t seem to be getting better for the London side.

So far this season (2019/2020), the club has recorded more draws than any other Premiership club with 13 already. Football has transcended mere exercise, records also speak.

Three clubs currently hold the record for most number of draws in a 38 game season; they are Newcastle United (2003/2004), Aston Villa (2006/2007 and 2011/2012) and Sunderland (2014/2015). They all had 17 draws in the seasons stated; Aston Villa has had the ‘privilege’ of doing it twice.

In the era when 42 games were played in the league, another three clubs held the record of most draws with 18 each. They were Manchester City (1993/1994), Sheffield United (1993/1994) and Southampton (1994/1995).

Any time Arsenal is to play, the fans can almost expect the match to end in a draw whether home or away. Arsenal currently sits in 10th position in the Premier league with 31 points. They have won only six games, lost another six and drawn 13. The number of games they have draw is more than the games they have won and lost put together.

With a new manager, Mikel Arteta, coming in after the sacking of Unai Emery, could Arsenal keep the records the same? A draw might be seen to be better than a lose but, sometimes, a team with more loses could be better than a team more draws.

For example, Everton currently sits in 9th position, just two point above Arsenal. However, Everton has so far recorded 10 loses (four more than Arsenal) but have won 9 games (three more than Arsenal) giving them 33 points.

There are currently 13 games to go in the Premiership; five more draws will earn Arsenal the record of the Premiership club with the most draws in a 38 game season. It is not really a record any club will want to have.
