Did Ketso Just Approve Extrajudicial Killings?

Ahmed Mohammed Ketso

The deputy governor of Niger state, Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, visited IDP  camps in Munya and Shiroro local government areas on Sunday to show what he called government commitment to the amelioration of their plight.

He however made statements that could haunt him in future, comments that sounded like a tacit approval of extrajudicial killings.

The elusive politician was recorded saying, “no need for us to wait…you hunt them you kill them”, while speaking to security operatives and vigilantes about the bandits plaguing the area.

What is Extrajudicial Killing?

An extrajudicial killing is the killing of a person by governmental authorities or individuals without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process.

Members of vigilante groups largely have no training on combat ethics and have been accused of human rights abuses in states like Zamfara and the northeast.

In October 2016, Human Rights Watch revealed that Nigerian security forces, IDP camp coordinators and members of the civilian vigilantes groups were guilty of raping women and girls in IDP camps.

Many members of the vigilante groups are young men below 30 who are prone to over-zealousness and high-handedness, the comments by Ketso could serve as an express green light for crimes that might not be forgotten in the current century.
