Nigeria Insecurity: Gunmen Kill 23 In Kogi State

At least 23 people were killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen in the Tawari area of Kogi state. However, the administrator of the local government, Musa Tanko Mohammed, confirmed that 19 villagers died in the invasion.

A survivor, Mrs. Comfort
Solomon, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that about 100 gunmen invaded the community late on Thursday (11:15PM) on motorcycles killing and burning houses until the early hours of Friday. The attackers are also said to have made away with foodstuff belonging to the villagers.

Reports also confirmed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward chairman in Tawari ward, Ibrahim Simbabi, and the Chief Imam of the village, Mallam Zakari Salihu, were among those slain in the carnage.

The militia also burnt down the palace of a Third-Class chief, Alhaji Yusuf Idris, and several other houses around it. Several other people are confirmed to have been injured in the attack.

The coming of the APC governments at state and federal levels in Nigeria has brought about a drastic reduction in Boko Haram activities but a concomitant astronomical rise in banditry, kidnapping and massacres by suspected herdsmen.

The Kogi state governor, Yahya Bello, who recently won a new second four year term in office after an election mired by irregularities and bloodshed, has called on security personnel to bring the perpetrators to book within the shortest possible time to serve as a deterrent.

The governor also called on residents and indigenes to go about their businesses as usual.

Tawari community is located in Kogi/Koto Karfe Council a few kilometres off Gegu town along the Lokoja-Abuja highway.
