As kidnapping and banditry have remained an indaba in
northern Nigeria, reports have confirmed that the district head of Birnin Gwari
central in Kaduna state, Alhaji Abubakar, was abducted today around 2pm on the
high way leading to
He is alleged to have been kidnapped along with a
secretary of education, Ibrahim Musa; they were travelling in the same vehicle.
At the time of writing this piece, it is not known if any ransom has been
demanded by the abductors.
Spokesman for the Kaduna state police command, DSP
Yakubu Sabo, has said the police will not be commenting on the incident until
investigations are carried out.
Over the years, the Birnin Gwari area which is a
border town between Kaduna state and Niger state has become so notorious for
its high prevalence rate of kidnappings and banditry that the inhabitants are almost
becoming inured to it.
Years back, the crime of kidnapping used to be heard of only in
southern Nigeria however, the south is paling into insignificance when compared
to the north on the subject matter.
Despite promises and ‘heavy spending’ by
the Buhari government on security, it hasn’t been able to obviate the security
challenges in the country especially in the north.
