In another series of bloodletting, bandits have killed 8 people in  Rafi local government of Niger state.

Gunmen on motorbikes are said to have descended on four communities in the local government killing at will, looting and damaging property.

This brings the total number of people killed by gunmen in Katsina and Niger states in the last six days to 65.

Just six days ago (Wednesday 15th April), bandits attacked Shiroro and Rafi local governments of the state killing 6 people and forcing 600 others to flee.

On 18th April, gunmen killed 47 people in Katsina state, the home state of the President Muhammadu Buhari. Police spokesman Gambo Isah told the dpa news agency that about 300 armed individuals were responsible for the carnage.

On 19th April, bandits attacked Sabon Layin Galadima in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State at around 5 pm killing 3 people and leaving two others injured.  Survivors reported that the bandits’ operation lasted for over an hour. The bandits also went away with several livestock and left houses in flames. A medical health worker at Unguwar Doka village, Sanusi Bello, was among those killed in the attack.

On 20th April, a man was shot by gunmen in the same village and over 40 people were taken captives by the gunmen, the whereabouts of the abductees remain unknown.

Fighting insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria, was a major campaign promise of Muhammadu Buhari when he pleaded to be voted for in 2015. It has become another item on the to do list of the administration that shows no sign of being achieved any time soon.

The coming of the APC governments at state and federal levels in Nigeria spearheaded by Muhammadu Buhari has brought about a reduction in Boko Haram activities but a concomitant astronomical rise in banditry, kidnapping and massacres by suspected herdsmen.
